As my father grandparents emigrated from Armenia to Argentina 100 years ago, I thought this was a great program for me to know more about my ancestry and live abroad after university. I was the first member of my family to travel back to Armenia since the 1915 genocide, so this was a very moving and emotional experience from the beginning.

Before arriving in Armenia, Birthright Armenia local director asked me on what field I would like to volunteer. Without hesitation, I answered “girls development and empowerment”. A few weeks later, my job site coordinator sent me the option to do an internship at GOALS and I accepted.

Little did I know that this opportunity will provide me with some of the best moments and memories during my stay in Armenia: from traveling and staying on the most remote regions of the country to helping on summer camps and finding a new group of lifetime friends in every member of the GOALS staff. We share countless unforgettable memories together and for that, I will always be grateful.

It was a dream come true to work daily towards a more inclusive Armenia, where every girl has better chances on and off the field. I had the privilege to see firsthand the positive and empowering impact the organization has on young women. When we opened a new league, for example, some girls would act shy and insecure about their skills. By the end of the season, they would show off what they have learned, danced confidently after the game and take selfies with their new group of friends.

Now, after being back in Argentina for a month, I can see and reflect from a distance on all the amazing learnings and discoveries this experience gave me. GOALS definitely left a big mark on me and I am sure this is just the start of my relationship with this amazing organization.
